What is Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession involved in helping to improve the function of a person affected by an injury, illness or disability. Physiotherapists work with you to achieve your goals and help you to get back to your usual hobbies, interests and lifestyle in order to improve your quality of life. They do this through various strategies including exercise, manual therapy, education and advice.

Physiotherapists have expert working knowledge of anatomy, injuries, pain mechanics, psychology and training principles, putting them in a great position to rehabilitate someone with an injury. Modern day physiotherapy has developed significantly and is very much an autonomous, evidence-based profession. In fact over the last 10 years there is research demonstrating physiotherapy to be as effective as surgery in treating a variety of conditions including certain knee, hip, ankle and shoulder conditions.

‘Physiotherapist’ is a protected healthcare title which requires a professional qualification in order to use it. Physiotherapists tend to be trained using a “biopsychosocial” model of healthcare, meaning that we understand that in addition to the biological mechanisms of a person's injury, how this impacts their quality of life and psychology are equally important considerations to enabling someone to get better.
